In 1981, my family immigrated to the United States from the former Soviet Union. At that time, I had just completed the 8th grade. Although I possessed only a rudimentary knowledge of the English language, my skills in science and mathematics were very strong. Upon my arrival in Chicago, I was accepted into the 9th grade at Sullivan High School.

After scoring well on various proficiency exams, however, I was placed instead in the 11th grade. Over the next two years, I maintained a 40-hour workweek while attending school and adapting to the language and culture of my new country. During this period, I established a strong work ethic that would become one of my defining characteristics. I graduated from high school in 1983 and, despite my struggles with English and my full-time job, I was accepted to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

I completed the 4-year Bachelor's degree program at UIC in only 3 years, graduating in 1986, while continuing to maintain my rigorous work schedule. Despite the language barrier, I became fascinated with the law and began to shape my life's goal of becoming a practicing attorney in the United States. Unfortunately, the financial shortcomings of an immigrant family, combined with my work responsibilities, prevented me from realistically pursuing my dream at that time. Although the "B" average I maintained during my college career is by no means poor, I believe it is not clearly indicative of my natural scholastic ability or my drive to succeed. My first priority has always been the health and financial well-being of my family; as a result, I did not fulfill my academic potential. But even then I envisioned one day having the means to achieve my goal, and I took the first step by enrolling in several criminal justice courses while at UIC; I earned "A"s in all.

In 1988, I was accepted to Loyola University's MBA program, which I successfully completed in 1992, while continuing to work on a full-time basis. One year before graduating, I began working as the Consultant/Business Development Manager for a CPA firm. I was teaching an accounting/computer seminar when the owner of a chain of retail computer stores (formerly ComputerLand of Illinois) approached me and offered me the position of General Manager. At 25, I became responsible for overseeing six computer store locations, as well as managing the 70 employees working for the chain.

My knowledge of the electronics and telecommunications industry continued to grow as the walls surrounding my homeland, the Soviet Union, began to break down. I realized that the evolving situation in the USSR presented an incredible opportunity and tremendous potential for business development. Since I already possessed the benefit of fluency in both Russian and English, an understanding of the Russian economy and culture, and an American-style business education, I saw this situation as a great personal and professional opportunity. In October of 1992, I launched Batko International, Inc., which specializes in telecommunications equipment consulting and sales.

Since 1992, I have guided the growth of Batko International from its humble start-up beginnings to a multi-million dollar operation. My international business experience includes working as a distributor for major U.S. and European corporations, including Hewlett Packard, Motorola, 3COM, US Robotics, SUN Microsystems, Cabletron, IBM, CISCO, Panduit, and SOLA. In 1997, Batko International was selected by RSM International, an international partnership of consulting firms with over 12,000 professional consultants, as their strategic partner for consulting work in Russia.

Batko International, Inc. has established an international reputation for quality and service while working with such prestigious clients as the White House of the Russian Federation and the office of former President Yeltsin. I can say with pride that my professional goals in the fields of telecommunications and electronics have been met and exceeded as a result of my hard work and dedication; being the sole founder and driving force behind a successful international company has instilled in me the confidence to pursue even more ambitious objectives.

Although I have enjoyed tremendous success as an international businessman, I am certain that I possess an even greater passion for the law. During my years with Batko International, Inc., I personally prepared various legal documents, such as contracts, letters of credit, and other official business agreements. When one of these contracts was reviewed by my legal counsel -- McDermott, Will, and Emery -- I received several compliments as to the thoroughness of my preparation. In fact, a letter of recommendation from Mr. Paul Langer, a former partner at the firm, will accompany this application.

Now is the time for me to embark upon a new career, in the legal profession, and to further my education with a degree from a rigorous law program. From my international business experience, I have gained an intellectual maturity that I feel is an asset of immeasurable value when pursuing a successful legal career. I will bring to your prestigious institution an insatiable desire to succeed, an unparalleled breadth of knowledge and experience, and a guarantee that I will exemplify the high standards of The John Marshall Law School throughout the duration of my legal career.
